    Visualizing Language: Oaxaca in L.A.

“The presence of those images in the city’s most important shrine to learning and culture was a momentary antidote to the deportations and the insults. Angelenos looked at these proud, painted men and women, and felt our spines stiffen for the fights to come.”

Hector Tobar, New York Times, Jan 27, 2018

Visualizing Language: Oaxaca in LA (2017-2018) was a collaborative project created for the Los Angeles Public Library, featuring a counter-narrative mural on indigenous history and presence created by the artist collective Tlacolulokos (Dario Canul and Cosijoesa Cernas) and a robust season of public programs at the Central Library and branch libraries throughout Los Angeles.

Commissioned by the Getty as part of their Pacific Standard Time LA/LA initiative.

Team: Louise Steinman, project team leader; Maureen Moore, exhibition producer; Xochitl Flores-Marcial, linguistic consultant; Imani Harris, grants/development; David Shook, literary consultant/catalogue ; Amanda de la Garza, exhibition curator; Yolanda Cruz, documentary filmmaker. Tlacolulokos murals now in permanent collection of MOLAA
